Hamas and Israel exchange captives, detainees before Gaza summit

A fragile ceasefire in Gaza has brought the release of the remaining 20 Israeli captives held by Hamas, alongside Israel’s release of nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners and detainees.
Families on both sides have been reunited amid scenes of anticipation and celebration in Tel Aviv, Gaza, and the occupied West Bank.
For many, this moment marks the culmination of years of suffering and political tension surrounding the captive crisis.
While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed the development as a triumph and praised US President Donald Trump’s role in mediation, reactions in Gaza remain mixed.
Amid relief at the pause in airstrikes and the arrival of aid, there is also anger and grief over the sustained devastation.
This deal—brokered through intense international mediation led by the US, Egypt, and Qatar—has raised hopes for peace, but its long-term significance remains uncertain.
For Palestinians, the focus is on immediate survival rather than lasting resolutions.
