Trump slashes foreign aid: Rural clinics in Senegal suffer shortages

يمكن 1, 2025 - 16:03
In a northern Senegal hospital, staff struggle to treat rising cases of malaria, hunger, and preventable disease. Aid cuts under Trump’s presidency slashed 83% of USAID programmes, crippling maternal and child health services. The UN warns of “pandemic-like effects” as vital medicine and vaccines run out across the region. Clinics are overwhelmed and understaffed, unable to prioritise patients as conditions worsen. US foreign aid has dwindled, while migrants send back over $600bn in remittances — far more than official aid. Local leaders say they can no longer rely on help from abroad and are turning to the next generation. With funding drying up, the goal of ending malaria by 2030 looks fragile — survival now lies in local hands. Al Jazeera’s Nicolas Haque reports from northern region of Podor, in Senegal.
