South Africa floods: Western Cape submerged after torrential rains, thousands displaced

Cape Town faces severe flooding aftermath with thousands displaced after heavy rains destroyed homes, particularly in informal settlements where makeshift structures couldn't withstand the downpour. At least 100 families in Nyanga Township alone have lost everything, queuing at distribution centres for essentials like blankets and hot meals. Authorities report assisting 21 settlements since Friday, distributing over 40,000 meals and 5,000 blankets. Residents describe desperate attempts to protect homes using sandbags and signs, though many properties remain uninhabitable. While the rain has temporarily stopped, blocked roads hinder recovery efforts as people dry salvaged belongings in the sun. The Western Cape's vulnerable communities, many living in corrugated shelters, face ongoing challenges with flood damage and food insecurity.
