If Iran withdraws from the NPT ‘other countries could follow suit’: Analysis

The Iranian government says it’s drafting legislation to withdraw the country from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) as the escalating conflict continues. The NPT, as the treaty is known, came into force in 1970 as a way for countries to stop the spread of nuclear weapons, promote peaceful uses of nuclear energy and encourage nuclear disarmament. Mark Fitzpatrick is an associate fellow for Strategy, Technology and Arms Control and the former director of the non-proliferation programme at the International Institute for Strategic Studies. He says now that Iran has been bombed by the US, he expects Tehran to leave the NPT and seek a nuclear weapon.
