Historian on Gaza: 'A pattern repeated through history’

يوليو 12, 2025 - 17:00
Professor Lorenzo Kamel, an international history expert at the University of Turin, joins Al Jazeera’s live from Rome. Reflecting on the current situation in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, Kamel emphasises that forced displacement has deep historical roots, including events like the 1948 Nakba when tens of thousands of Palestinians were expelled. When asked about Israel's plan to build a so-called "humanitarian zone" in Rafah, Kamel rejects direct historical parallels to concentration camps, arguing that such comparisons can distract from addressing the present reality. He describes these zones as "transfer camps" preparing for further displacement, where civilians are left without basic necessities and are targeted if they refuse to move.
