Filipino sailors heroically welcomed after Houthi Red Sea attack

Eight Filipino sailors received a hero’s welcome in Manila after surviving a Houthi attack in the Red Sea, part of a campaign to pressure Israel over Gaza. Officials praised their resilience, highlighting the risks faced by overseas Filipino workers, who are vital to the economy. Rising tensions have endangered sailors, with Houthis previously holding 17 Filipinos and killing two in a March attack. Over half the crew of the MV Eternity C remain missing, underscoring the dangers for Filipino seafarers, who form a third of the global maritime workforce. Conflicts also affect Filipinos on land, like a caregiver in Israel who survived an Iranian missile strike but struggles with trauma. Despite ongoing violence, most Filipino workers in the region stay, with rights groups urging the government to demand an end to the wars. While unofficially calling for restraint, Manila’s priority remains locating missing sailors. Al Jazeera’s Barnaby Lo reports from Manila.
