EU-US trade deal brings relief but leaves Europe bitter

European financial markets breathed a sigh of relief as the US and EU averted a full-blown trade war, though European leaders criticised the lopsided deal. While German automakers secured a reduction in car tariffs from 25% to 15%, the agreement imposes painful new tariffs on other sectors and binds the EU to $750bn in US energy and military purchases and $600bn in investments. France’s prime minister denounced it as a capitulation, lamenting Europe’s "submission" to US pressure. Critics argue the EU, hostage to American leverage, accepted harsh terms to avoid Trump’s threatened 30% tariffs. Key exemptions for aircraft and agriculture were granted, but spirits, wine, and pharmaceuticals face uncertainty. The deal underscores Europe’s vulnerable dependence on the US, prompting sober reflection about strategic autonomy. Negotiators admitted it was the best possible outcome under duress.
