TikTok, the popular short-form video app, has become a central focus in debates over technology sovereignty and global trade. Initially branded a national security threat during Trump’s first term, the app’s Chinese owner, ByteDance, was later pressured by Washington to sell its US operations or face a ban. The uncertainty continued into Trump’s second term, as negotiations over ownership and data control unfolded. A new framework eventually allowed for the majority of American investment and oversight of TikTok’s algorithm. The move was presented as protecting national interests and user data. The saga highlights the clash between freedom, control, and the influence of AI-driven platforms on young American users. Al Jazeera’s Alex Baird takes a closer look at the geopolitical tug-of-war being fought over TikTok- and its power to influence millions. Joining us from Danbury in Connecticut, is Bill Holstein.
