“We don’t want to see the Amazon become a savannah,” said UN chief António Guterres ahead of Cop30, which will be held in the Amazon rainforest next month. Subscribe ► bit.ly
Speaking to the Guardian’s global environment writer, Jonathan Watts, Guterres spoke about the ‘failure’ of the Cop process to limit global heating to 1.5C. “Countries are presenting their nationally determined contributions - from those received until now, there is an expectation of a reduction of emissions of 10%. We will need 60%,” said Guterres. He said overshooting was now ‘inevitable’ and in order to avoid tipping points, countries will need to ‘change course’ to ensure the overshooting is as small as possible. The UN climate summit will take place in Belém from 10 November until 21 November. #climatecrisis #climatechange #cop30 #unitednations #antonioguterres
